The player known throughout the world as “The Zeus of Soccer” had scored hundreds of goals during his legendary career. Fans filled stadiums wherever he played, hoping to witness another moment of magic.
One sunny afternoon, his team was playing in the championship final before more than 80,000 spectators. The match was tied 1–1 with only seconds remaining.
A teammate passed the ball high into the air. Most players expected Zeus to bring it down and shoot. Instead, he did something no one had ever seen before. He leapt into the air, spinning as he rose. Time seemed to slow down. With a thunderous strike, he connected with the ball far above the heads of the defenders.
The ball curved through the sky like a bolt of lightning. The goalkeeper never even saw it. A moment later, the net bulged and the stadium erupted in celebration. It was the most spectacular goal anyone had ever witnessed.
Then something strange happened. Dark clouds gathered above the stadium. A brilliant beam of golden light shone down from the sky, surrounding Zeus as he stood near the centre circle. The crowd fell silent. Slowly, he began to rise into the air.
Before disappearing into the clouds, Zeus smiled and waved to the crowd. “Keep dreaming,” he called. “Every great goal begins with believing.” Then he vanished into the heavens.
To this day, no one knows where he went. But whenever a player scores an unbelievable goal, fans still look toward the sky and smile. “Zeus is watching,” they say.
